Podcast Production Workflow: From Recording to Publishing in 2 Hours
Many podcasters spend 8-10 hours producing a single episode. This unsustainable approach leads to burnout and inconsistent publishing. An optimized workflow gets quality episodes published in under 2 hours of total production time.
The Streamlined Production Process
Pre-Recording (15 minutes)
- Send guest pre-interview questionnaire
- Create episode outline with 5-7 key questions
- Prepare intro/outro scripts
- Test audio setup (mic levels, recording software)
Recording (45-60 minutes)
Record slightly longer than your target episode length. A 30-minute published episode requires about 40 minutes of raw audio after editing out false starts, long pauses, and tangents.
Editing (30-45 minutes)
Use AI-powered editing tools like Descript or Riverside.fm to:
- Remove filler words (um, uh, like) automatically
- Delete long pauses
- Fix audio levels and remove background noise
- Add intro/outro music
Don't over-edit. Listeners prefer authentic conversations over sterile, perfectly edited episodes.
Show Notes & Assets (20-30 minutes)
- Use AI transcription for show notes outline
- Create episode description (150-200 words)
- Design episode artwork (use template)
- Extract 3-5 social media clips
- Generate timestamps for key topics
Publishing & Distribution (10-15 minutes)
- Upload to podcast host (Transistor, Buzzsprout, etc.)
- Schedule social posts with clips
- Send email to subscribers
- Upload video version to YouTube
Batching for Efficiency
Record 3-4 episodes in one day to maximize efficiency. You're already in "podcast mode" with equipment set up and energy high. Then batch editing and publishing separately.
